The 12 Houses of Astrology

The Landscape of Your Life

Setting the Stage

The easiest way to visualize the chart is theater. If the Planets are the actors and the Zodiac Signs are their costumes, the Houses are the sets and stages where the drama actually happens. Mars (The Warrior) in Aries (Red Armor) behaves very differently if he is on the battlefield (House 10, Career) versus in the bedroom (House 8, Intimacy). The Houses ground the cosmic energy into your real, daily life.

The Wheel of Time

While the Zodiac Signs are determined by the Earth's orbit around the Sun (taking a full year), the Houses are determined by the Earth's rotation on its own axis (taking just 24 hours). This makes the House system the most precise and personal part of your chart. It captures the exact 'slice of sky' that was rising, setting, or culminating at the precise minute of your birth.

The Four Angles

The chart is anchored by four massive pillars found at the compass points. The Ascendant (AC) in the East represents your Self. The Descendant (DC) in the West represents the Other. The Midheaven (MC) at the top represents your Public Standing, and the Imum Coeli (IC) at the bottom represents your Private Roots. These four points define the structure of your entire life's story.
